I charged up the battery per the instructions and got a video to check it out. if it hadn't had words on the opening screen I might not have noticed how bad the pixilation is, enough I would guess, to make reading the credits impossible. Neither the color nor sharpness are anywhere near as good as on the phillips (which actually costs a bit less), nor is the build quality. This machine is unusual, in that it has a detachable battery. This *could* be an advantage as it would allow you to carry a spare and double the battery life...BUT it is just about impossible to find the spare/ replacement battery; even audiovox's site doesn't list them (among the dozens they list for other models). It's also worth noting that the way it hangs off the back is kind of clunky and means the machine will need to be treated with more care than many. I bought this because it had such good (4.5 stars) reviews, but noticed that many are from people who bought this for a toddler or other young child, and may not even have watched it themselves. I bought this for myself, for travel, and am much less impressed. Last year my son got a coby 10" tablet for the about the same price (actually, $20 less). It is sturdy, compact and has better picture, better build. I was looking for something smaller (than his 10")...but this isn't- (only the screen). I may be returning this, as for just a few dollars more you can get a better picture & more features, and EVERY other portable dvd player I've seen is more compact. An 8" player should not weigh as much, and take up as much space as a 10". I'd recommend the coby, phillips and toshiba players over this one (for good bets in this price range).
